　　從蒯因備受討論的＜經驗主義的兩個教條＞ 寫作那年(1951年)起算，至蒯因於1995年出版《從刺激到科學》 這本書為止，蒯因的哲學生涯已經超過了四十年。在這四十多年當中，蒯因的確在哲學立場上有許多轉變，但是他哲學的大架構，如自然主義、經驗主義、行為主義式的語意學等，仍然保持不變。
　　本論文所依據的蒯因著作主要是《追求真理》 及其前後數年(1986年至1995年)的文章、專書以及蒯因對其他批評者的回應文章。這些回應文章對釐清蒯因的立場非常有幫助。
　　本論文不在探討蒯因哲學的轉變，而是希望掌握住蒯因哲學幾個未變的主要主張，檢查蒯因的各論點是否與這幾個主要主張相互一致，進而比較「科學理論的不可限定說」(underdetermination of global scientific theory by evidence)與「翻譯的不確定性」(indeterminacy of translation)之間的異同。
　　本論文主要處理的問題是蒯因以其哲學的基本架構，如何說明「整體科學理論的不可限定說」與「翻譯的不確定性」之間的異同。要處理這個問題，有必要先行釐清蒯因的知識論與語意學，因為「整體科學理論的不可限定說」是從蒯因「經驗主義的自然化知識論」中發展出來的；而「翻譯的不確定性」則是他「行為主義式語意學」的結果。
　　本論文分為四章。第一章「蒯因的經驗主義」，說明蒯因的自然主義立場，自然化知識論所要處理的問題，以及不同於他之前經驗主義者（英國經驗論者與邏輯實證論者）的經驗主義新主張。這一章的架構主要依據蒯因的＜經驗主義的五個里程碑＞ 這篇文章。
　　第二章處理蒯因的「科學理論的不可限定說」。筆者從觀察語句的三個條件出發，檢視蒯因對「科學理論的經驗內容為何？」這個問題的解答，並說明經驗主義之證據理論支持這個論點：可以有不只一套科學理論有相同的經驗內容。甚至可以有另一套與我們的整體科學理論不同的整體科學，這兩套理論有相同的經驗內容，但是在邏輯上不相容，這就是「整體科學(global science)理論的不可限定說」。
　　第二章第三、四節處理蒯因面臨之自然主義與經驗主義之間衝突的問題，筆者在第四節中為蒯因的立場辯護，筆者認為蒯因的兩個可能立場－「宗派」立場與「兼容並蓄」立場－都符合於自然主義與經驗主義。
第三章處理「翻譯的不確定性」以及「指涉的不確定性」(indeterminacy of
reference)，前者著重在對語句的翻譯，後者則是對「字詞」(term)之指涉的翻譯。這兩個論點都是蒯因行為主義式語意學的結果，「徹底翻譯」(radical translation)即是蒯因用來論證這兩個論點的思想實驗。第三節中並討論到筆者的想法，那就是，徹底翻譯思想實驗中含有一個論點：「在徹底翻譯情境下，語言學家是能學會使用異國部落之語言的」。這個論點並不像「人能學會語言」一樣明顯，而是可以爭論的。「翻譯的不確定性」以及「指涉的不確定性」這兩個論點的成立，說明設置「命題」這種存在物作為語句意義的做法是行不通的。
　　第四章分別從蒯因的經驗主義之證據理論的立場、物理主義立場、實在論立場、以及「翻譯異國的整體科學理論」論證，來比較「整體科學理論的不可限定說」與「翻譯的不確定性」之間的相同與相異之處。筆者並指出：經驗主義之證據理論、物理主義、實在論，都是蒯因的自然主義所支持的立場。
　　若從經驗主義之證據理論的立場來看，則兩者是相同的，都是可以有兩套以上的理論由相同的證據所支持。但從物理主義立場來看，「翻譯的不確定性」的不確定性，比起「整體科學理論的不可限定說」而言，是額外的(additional)，因為存有論問題是在物理學內部解決的問題，物理學告訴我們何物存在，並且「沒有任何變化而沒有微觀物理狀態的重新分佈」。所以這些物理存在物一旦固定下來，依照蒯因的行為主義式語意學，徹底翻譯情境下所有可用之證據也跟著固定下來，在有一部以上之翻譯手冊能符合於這些證據的情況下，沒有額外的「有關事實」(fact of the matter)可以來決定哪一部翻譯手冊才是唯一正確的翻譯手冊。
　　蒯因之「翻譯異國的整體科學理論」的論證也是在說明「翻譯的不確定性」的不確定性是額外的。因為在我們有兩套經驗上等同之關於外在世界的整體科學理論的情況下，根據異國部落成員的所有相關行為（這些是語意學所允許的所有證據），如果歸屬她們相信其中一套理論是未遭遇到困難的，則歸屬她們相信另一套理論也不會遭遇到困難，因為都符合所有的語意學證據，翻譯者有自由度可以選擇歸屬她們以相信哪一套理論。這說明「翻譯的不確定性」的不確定性是額外的。
　　從實在論的立場來看，我們的整體科學理論既然是可錯的，而且我們又缺乏其它的觀點，可以來比較實在界(reality)與我們的理論描述之間的差異，所以我們願意相信，「實在界以不可限定的方式，超出於人類儀器(apparatus)的觀察範域之外。」 但在語意學中，「語言意義，除了從可觀察之環境下的公開行為中蒐集之外，就沒有別的了。」 所以語意學中不存在「不可即的(inaccessible)事實」，也沒有「超出於人類儀器的觀察範域之外」的東西。這也是這兩個論點的不同之處。
　　在第四章，筆者並且分別在各節討論了杭斯基(Noam Chomsky)、吉普森(Roger
Gibson)、弗勒斯多(Dagfinn Follesdal)及所羅蒙(Miriam Solomon)對「不可限定說」與「不確定性」之間異同的看法，並提出筆者的批評。

　　The question what are the differences and similarities between
underdetermination of scientific theory by evidence and indeterminacy of translation in Quine's philosophy is dealt with by the author in this thesis.
　　The author interprets that the main theme in Quine's philosophy is
naturalism. According to his naturalism, he claims the existence of the external world (realism) and sees the inquiry of natural science, however fallible and corrigible, as our only way to explore the world. We simply have no higher tribunal to appeal to with respect to reality of the world. Both empiricism and physicalism are derivative doctrines from his naturalism. The
thesis of underdetermination of scientific theory is derived from his holistic empiricism without two dogmas.
　　Quine's thesis of indeterminacy of translation is the result of his
insistence on linguistic behaviorism. Radical translation is the thought
experiment that Quine used to establish indeterminacy of translation and reject both the Platonic semantics and mentalistic semantics. The author
claims that this thought experiment fits Quine's purpose because he insists that linguists are able to learn the alien language under radical translation.
　　The parallel between both theses is that the totality of possible evidence is insufficient to determine the system uniquely. Their differences are shown from the three respects of realism, physicalism, and translating alien physical theory. The author makes it clear in the thesis that the arguments of these four thought lines are faithful to Quine's naturalism as the ultimate premise.
